Power Grid
From the publishers website: This is the new and improved (rules and graphics!) Funkenschlag from Friedemann Friese. Players compete to build the best network of power lines and stations, choosing which cities to supply and what sources of power to use. Wizardopoly would like to add: It is some credit to the designers of this game that despite having one of the dullest blurbs ever written, Power Grid is widely regarded as one of the top five best games! Each round is divided into several phases during which players must bid to buy the available power stations, then buy the fuel to run these power plants, then build networks to carry this power to various cities and finally reap the benefit of all this planning when they receive money from the greatful inhabitants of these cities. Then we start again for a new round. But wait! The interesting part is that as the game progresses the power stations available at auction become more efficient (i.e. they can provide power to more cities for the same amount of fuel) but more expensive, the cities become scarcer, the more people buy a resource the more expensive it becomes, and, of course, the more cities you power up the more money you get at the end of the round. Power Grid is a beautifully balanced game that is far more fun to play than you might think!
